UNICEF Highlights Challenges Faced by Girl-Child, Urges Immediate Action

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised concerns over the numerous challenges faced by the girl child, which continue to violate their rights, limit their opportunities, and hinder their futures.

Celine Lafoucriere, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office for South-West Nigeria, noted that one in five women between the ages of 20 and 24 marry as children, and adolescent girls account for up to 75% of new HIV infections globally. Lafoucriere made this statement in a press release to mark the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.

She further highlighted the alarming statistics, including that one in three girls suffer from anemia and many others are deprived of access to education, employment, and training opportunities.

“Today, one in five women aged 20 to 24 were married as children. Nearly one in four adolescent girls in partnerships have experienced sexual or physical abuse. Globally, up to 75% of new HIV infections occur among adolescent girls. One in three girls suffers from anemia, a form of malnutrition. Additionally, one in four girls, compared to boys, are neither in education, employment, nor training,” Lafoucriere stated.

Reflecting on the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” she emphasized the importance of empowering girls despite the barriers they face. She called for girls to be respected, protected, and given equal opportunities to thrive.

“October 11 is a key moment globally to celebrate girls, amplify their voices, and recognize their leadership. The day belongs to everyone committed to protecting girls’ rights and taking action to ensure their full protection,” Lafoucriere added.

She called on society, groups, and governments to support girls by upholding their rights, advancing their education, and providing the necessary resources for their success.

“Girls cannot bring about change alone. They need allies who listen and respond to their needs—people like you and me. Together, we can build a future where every girl’s rights are safeguarded. Evidence shows that when girls are given the right support, resources, and opportunities, their potential is limitless. When they achieve their goals, we move closer to achieving our global goals,” she concluded.
