Speak out against reckless drivers — FRSC admonishes road users

Mr Shehu Mohammed, Corps Marshal of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Thursday called on road users to speak out against reckless drivers to avoid crashes on highways across the country.

Muhammed made this known in his letter read by Ondo State Sector Commander of FRSC, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, during a stakeholders’ meeting on 2024 ember months sensitisation organised by FRSC in Akure.

The theme of the campaign was “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers”.

The FRSC boss explained that the stakeholders’ meeting was to align with the ongoing “Ember Months” campaign, which focused on empowering commuters to know their rights.

“You will agree me that the timing of this meeting could not be more appropriate especially, as the corps digitises its operations in line with the president’s renewed hope agenda for economic growth.

” So, it is time for all road users to speak out against reckless driving through the instrumentality of the recently launched FRSC Mobile Application.

“In order to sustain our operations, we need to re-evaluate and adapt new strategies to align with the dynamics of contemporary transport system,” he said.

Muhammed, who appreciated the stakeholders for their contributions towards ensuring a safer motoring environment in Nigeria, charged the road users to continue support and collaborate with the corps.

Also, Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, represented by Engr. John Ajayi, Director of Inland Waterways, said that the yearly campaign had made positive impacts in the lives of the citizenry.

According to Aiyedatiwa, the time has come for drivers to change their altitude toward the last four months of the year for them to remain alive.

“We will continue to support FRSC in the state, we want our drivers to join hands with the road safety personnel to reduce crashes to thr minimum in the country and state at large,” he said.

Earlier, Mr Enikanoselu Migbowon, State Secretary of Road Employer Association of Nigeria (RETAN), who applauded the corps for their role on highways, urged the government to intervene in reducing sub-standard spare parts in the market.

“On our part as a union, we do sensitise our members on a weekly and monthly basis to be cautious on the road.

“But the government needs to do something about sub-standard spare parts and repair our roads,” he said.

Similarly, Mrs Bosede Olanusi, State Coordinator of Female Drivers Association of Nigeria (FEDAN) , who called for more enlightement for drivers, urged drivers to shun roadside driving schools to reduce crashes.

“Most of crashes are caused by the impatience of drivers over the payment of the installments of their vehicles,” Olanusi said.

Representative of the Nigeria Police Force, Fire Services, NSCDC, among others, were present at the stakeholders’meeting.
