By Isaac Afolabi

Ondo state Governor Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa has pledged his administration’s commitment to prioritizing children’s healthcare in the state.

Speaking at the launch of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program for girls aged 9 to 14, coinciding with Children’s Day celebrations in Akure, the state capital, Aiyedatiwa emphasized the importance of early intervention against HPV.

“HPV is a malignancy that affects the cervix, which can be devastating.

This vaccine is crucial in preventing cervical cancer, and today, on Children’s Day, we are launching this initiative to safeguard our young girls’ futures,” he stated. “This vaccine is highly effective when given to girls between 9 and 14 years old, and its administration today underscores our commitment to children’s health.”

Highlighting the administration’s recent recruitment of additional health workers, Gov’ Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed the state’s focus on enhancing healthcare services for all residents.

Health Commissioner Banji Ajaka added that cervical cancer, caused by HPV, is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Nigeria, following breast cancer. He urged parents to ensure their daughters receive the vaccine, noting the severe personal and financial burdens of cancer.

Dr Ajaka also addressed misinformation about the vaccine, dismissing conspiracy theories that it aims to reduce the global population as baseless and false. “We are committed to protecting our young girls from the dire consequences of cervical cancer,” he concluded.
