The Council of Obas in Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas of Ondo State has called on President Bola Tinubu to decentralize the protection of crude oil pipelines across oil-producing states in the country.
The monarchs made the appeal during a press briefing in Igbokoda, where the Secretary of the Ilaje Obas Council and Odoka of Obe-Ogbaro, Oba Obafemi Ogbaro, stated that decentralization would enhance the safety and security of critical national assets.
According to him, entrusting pipeline protection to indigenous security outfits would ensure greater effectiveness, while also creating employment opportunities and promoting environmental protection in host communities.
Oba Ogbaro further emphasized the unity and capability of the Ilaje people, expressing confidence in Bibopere Ajube, Chairman of Gallery Security Services Ltd, to oversee pipeline security operations in Ondo State.
He noted that Ajube’s firm has a proven track record in managing security challenges and safeguarding pipeline infrastructure in the region.
Supporting the call, the Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Odidiomo Afolabi Oladimeji, said decentralizing pipeline security would strengthen collaboration between Ilaje and Ijaw communities in protecting their environment and curbing vandalism.
Similarly, the Executive Chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area, Caleb Ebimobowei Molos, endorsed the initiative, urging that states be empowered to secure pipelines within their jurisdictions.
The meeting, attended by traditional rulers from Ilaje and Ijaw communities in the oil-producing areas of Ondo State, unanimously agreed that the Federal Government should urgently decentralize pipeline protection.
They noted that such a move would reinforce the region’s security architecture, safeguard Nigeria’s crude oil assets, and create jobs for youths.
The monarchs also reiterated their support for Bibopere Ajube, describing him as experienced, capable, and a worthy ambassador well-positioned to handle pipeline security operations in the state.
